The introduction of the FHS has brought the industry together like never before. Through initiatives such as the Glass and Glazing Federation’s New Build Housing Group, system houses, installers, fabricators and regulatory bodies are working collectively to clarify new build requirements.

VEKA actively contributes to these conversations through cross-association consultation groups alongside the British Plastics Federation, Flat Glass Manufacturers Association, British Woodworking Federation and Council for Aluminium in Building.

Key technical expectations

The Future Homes Standard is due for publication soon, followed by a short transition period before full application to new builds in England. Here’s what specifiers can expect:

  • Area-weighted thermal performance: U-values will be calculated using the total area of glazing across the building.
  • Exact configuration testing: Performance must be demonstrated for real-world window and door configurations, including ancillaries such as cills, frame extensions and through-glass Georgian bars.
  • U-values: Notional values are expected to remain around 1.2 W/m²K for windows and 1.0 W/m²K for doors, with limiting values likely at 1.6 W/m²K.
